Position Description:

The Front-End Developer and Web Designer will primarily be responsible for creating designs and front-end development of new and existing sites, landing pages and templates, and overseeing and/or making decisions about site rebuilds. He/she will serve as the
point person all Wordpress-related projects and updates. As a member of the central digital marketing department, which serves a number of publishers and online properties at Macmillan, this individual will also provide guidance and troubleshooting support
to the various marketing groups, and assist in the development of trainings and materials to ensure all users have the background knowledge to use tools such as Wordpress.

The ability to effectively communicate with developers and non-developers is critical for success in this role, as is the importance of understanding the basics of marketing, web development and user experience.

Major Responsibilities:

o Oversee all Wordpress-related projects, including updates/enhancements to existing sites and contributing to the development of new sites and pages.

o Collaborate with other designers/developers in the company to ensure consistent use of branding, tone, look and feel for individual imprints.

o Produce wireframes, design mock-ups and creative assets, as well as HTML and CSS code for major projects

o Address ad hoc design/development projects and research as needed

o Create well-organized, clear source files.

o Perform quality assurance on all code produced.

o Test all mark-up to ensure W3C standards compliance, optimized speed and code structure.

o Produce designs for banner ads, websites, landing pages, presentations, email newsletters, or videos, as needed.

o Provide guidance and best practices to other designers/developers and marketing staff.

Required Skills / Knowledge:

o Expert in hand-coded responsive design in HTML5 and CSS3

o Very strong understanding of W3C, Standards Compliant XHTML, and Javascript and its libraries (jQuery etc.)

o Strong proficiency PHP, building custom Wordpress themes

o Experience translating prototypes and designs into clean, valid, and launch-ready mark-up

o Excellent understanding of DOM

o Working knowledge of Adobe suite of products (Photoshop, etc.)

o Proven experience building cross-browser compatible, mobile friendly markup that works well with SEO

o Knowledge of various online marketing channels and tactics including social media, SEO/SEM, mobile, video, display advertising, email marketing a plus

Experience Needed:

o 2 - 4 years experience as a front-end developer

o 2 - 4 years experience working with PHP and custom Wordpress themes

o 2 - 4 years design experience

o Proven and strong understanding of current practices in responsive website design

o Deep expertise and proven track record completing front-end development and design projects on time and to spec.

o Must enjoy designing and coding and strive to stay on top of current trends and practices.

o Must be passionate about and take great pride in producing well-commented, properly structured, pixel perfect code.

o Proven track record of multi-tasking and prioritizing work to meet deadlines

o Must be eager to gain experience and skills in new areas (new programs/languages, online marketing, back-end development, etc.).

o Must be comfortable working independently or with non-developers as well as backend developers to ensure overall project completion.

o Must have a good sense of humor and enjoy working with other people

o Must have excellent communication skills

o Basic familiarity with using web analytics systems (e.g. Google Analytics) a plus

o Experience with an email service provider (e.g. ExactTarget), Google AdWords, Facebook, mobile marketing tools a plus, but not required

o Experience with UX, usability, and information architecture a plus

Educational Background Required:

o Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Graphic Design, Web Development or other related field or equivalent work experience.
